Report suggests change of attitude is behind Alfredo Morelos’ international recall

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos has been called up to the Colombia national team for upcoming friendly matches with Chile and Algeria.

It is just reward for the 23-year-old, who has scored 13 goals already this season. The call-up to Los Cafeteros is also something of a redemption tale for the Ibrox star. In the summer, he missed out on a place in the 40-man shortlist for Copa America.

Now, MARCA in Colombia has explained why. They report that Morelos was left out of the national team because of ‘problems with his coach, Steven Gerrard’. Whilst out of context that could look bad, what MARCA is actually referring to are the discipline issues Morelos suffered toward the end of last season.

Morelos received his fifth red card of the season in the Old Firm derby defeat at the end of March, which came just days after he had featured for Colombia in an international clash with South Korea.

His ill-discipline in Glasgow reportedly cost him any chance of a place in the Colombia Copa America squad.

However, the report now claims that Colombia boss Carlos Queiroz has identified a change in Morelos’ ‘attitude’ and that has been rewarded.

There is no doubt that Morelos has behaved better so far this season. He has three yellow cards, but no reds, from his 17 appearances and appears to have been calmed down by Gerrard.

Rangers fans will hope that continues on international duty, as they would love to have an international star at Ibrox.
