Celtic fans have been getting excited about the possibility of signing a talented young player with a famous footballing second name recently.
Atletico Madrid youngster Rodrigo Riquelme has recently resurfaced as a potential transfer target for Celtic this summer.
It is not the first time either. Back in March, it was suggested by Spanish publication MARCA that Celtic were keen. In April, Diario AS claimed it was a performance for the Atletico Madrid Castilla team in a UEFA Youth League 4-0 win over Rangers’ Colts side that inspired that attention. The youngster provided three assists in that game and Celtic scouts were clearly impressed.
However, despite all of this mounting evidence, a new report suggests Celtic will not be making a move for Riquelme this summer.
The Daily Record reports that Celtic sources have confirmed there is no current interest in bringing the 20-year-old to Paradise this summer.
Of course, Celtic might still retain an interest in the player. However, it appears he is not currently being thought of as any sort of priority for Celtic going forward.
In April, it was reported by MARCA that Atleti plans to hand Riquelme a new long-term contract and he could be convinced into extending beyond his current 2021 expiry by an expected push into the first-team at the Estadio Metropolitano.
Celtic, it seems, may have to just keep an eye on the situation and see how things develop further down the line.
