Celtic are one of the sides interested in signing Leicester City defender Filip Benkovic during the final hours of the January transfer window, according to a report from The Northern Echo.
It may not be a huge surprise to see Benkovic loaned out before this week’s deadline. The 22-year-old – who cost £13 million (via Sky Sports) – is yet to make a Premier League appearance for the Foxes.
The Northern Echo reports that the Hoops want the Croatia international. But they reportedly face competition from Middlesbrough, Bristol City and Derby County for his signature.
It should be noted that Neil Lennon recently suggested that he would be content if Celtic did no further business (via BBC Sport).
So perhaps it may be fair to assume that the Bhoys are not planning to put themselves as one of the front-runners in the race.
TBR View – Benkovic could be shrewd signing for Celtic
As Lennon notes, Celtic can probably be happy if their squad remains the same beyond the deadline. They have plenty of depth across the park, and are in excellent form.
Nevertheless, Benkovic may be a very shrewd last-minute addition if he is available.
Managers seem to be wary of making too many January signings in case it upsets the balance of the squad.
But having previously been on loan at Celtic, the time it would take him to adapt should be shorter than it would be for other targets.
And Benkovic showed a lot of promise during his previous spell at Parkhead. Injuries restricted how many appearances he made. But he often looked a class act.
So bringing him back would arguably be a very good piece of business if Celtic can win the race.
