Liverpool have recently been linked with a move for Schalke defender Ozan Kabak. As reported by The Mirror, the Turkish international is being targeted with the Reds in need of a new central defender following the season-ending injury to star player Virgil van Dijk.

The report claims that Liverpool would want to pay £20 million for the player, with Schalke previously valuing the 20-year-old at £40 million and now hoping for £30 million.

Jurgen Klopp has previously been reported, both by The Mirror and 90Min, to be a big fan of the defender, with it suggested he may have asked for an opinion on the player from former Schalke boss and old friend David Wagner.

But it seems that stance has already changed from the German side.

SportBild is reporting that AC Milan made an offer of €20 million (£18m) for the player in the summer which was swiftly rejected by the Gelsenkirchen club. But they also made it clear that the same offer now, with Schalke’s finances heavily impacted by the global health crisis, would have to be accepted.

That means that Liverpool could now get their hands on a player previously valued at £40 million for over better than half the price.

Of course, some Liverpool fans will wonder if the club should even be making this move. Fringe players Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips have stepped up with aplomb in Liverpool’s hour of need whilst Fabinho, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez appear capable of holding the fort in the absence of the Dutchman.

But considering the bargain price that Kabak appears to be available for, perhaps Liverpool will have to revisit a move in January.
