The Telegraph have claimed that Leeds United, West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City are interested in signing Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle, and the player now wants a move to a Championship club.
Gayle, 28, went on loan to West Brom last summer for the season in a deal that saw Salomon Rondon move in the opposite direction for the 2018-19 campaign. Gayle shone for the Baggies, scoring 24 goals.
Now, the latest report claims that Gayle is keen to return to the Championship after enjoying his spell in the Midlands. It is also claimed he is upset at Newcastle, after new Toon signing Joelinton was given the no.9 shirt.
Leeds are likely to want to sign a striker, given Kemar Roofe’s imminent move to Anderlecht. Stoke are also keen, while the Baggies will want to bring Gayle back but there are doubts over whether they can afford the Toon ace.
TBR’s view – West Brom a safe option, Leeds the most exciting
Stoke struggled to keep up with the Championship’s pace setters last season and they have brought in some experienced second-tier stars to help boost their chances. But they are not favourites to go up.
Indeed, Leeds or West Brom are said to have more of a chance of promotion, especially after wins over the weekend while Stoke lost at home to QPR. West Brom is a somewhat safer option, given he was there last season.
But Leeds proves to be the most exciting option. Under the legendary Marcelo Bielsa, in one of the most attacking styles of football in England, Gayle would thrive. The chance of promotion is there, too.
