Stoke City are reportedly eyeing a potential swoop for Newcastle United ace Matt Ritchie.
According to the Sun, Championship outfit Stoke are prepared to make an “ambitious move” for the wide man in the summer and try to convince him to drop down a division from the Premier League.
It is understood that they are monitoring the situation of the Scotsman at St James’ Park.
Ritchie, who earns £45,000-a-week (Spotrac), has been transformed this campaign into a left wing-back and played a key role in the Magpies safety.
But the Sun previously reported that the 29-year-old has been informed by manager Rafael Benitez that he can leave at the end of the season, as he couldn’t agree a deal to extend his existing contract beyond 2021.
Stoke would be pulling off a masterstroke if they added Ritchie to their cause for next year, but Newcastle simply shouldn’t let it happen.
He’s been one of the most consistent performers since dropping back into a full-back role and it still doesn’t prevent him joining in with attacks.
The wide man has a tremendous work-rate up and down the flank, something that makes him ideal in Benitez’s system.
Newcastle should reconsider the future of him, as he’s rarely put a foot wrong in the last couple of months.
Ritchie has made 38 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring three goals and supplying seven assists in return.
