Celtic man Jonny Hayes is a target for a host of Championship clubs, including Stoke City and Preston North End, following his impending release from the Bhoys.
The Scottish champions confirmed yesterday that they would be allowing Hayes to walk away from the club. This, despite the 32-year-old being a key figure for the club over the last few seasons.
And according to a report from the Daily Mail, Championship trio Stoke, Cardiff, and Preston could now all battle it out for the Republic of Ireland winger.
Hayes had made 26 appearances for Celtic this season prior to the campaign coming to an abrupt end. Despite only scoring once, Neil Lennon valued the 32-year-old a lot within his ranks.
The Bhoys also opted against giving a new deal to the defender, Jozo Simunovic.
The perfect Championship signing – TBR View
At 32, Hayes might well be past his very very best but for the Championship, he’d be ideal.
All the clubs mentioned would find a space in their squad for him. Alex Neil at Preston would seem a particularly good fit given his knowledge of the Scottish game in general.
It’s likely that any contract Hayes gets now will be his last decent one.
Hayes comes with a pedigree from playing for the best team in Scotland and comes with the winning mentality of being a champion, too. That’s a commodity that can’t be purchased and could prove vital for all three clubs as they look to battle out of the Championship.
