Rangers manager Steven Gerrard reportedly still has his eye on Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy.

The Daily Record claims the winger is still very much on the 40-year-old’s radar, despite having become more involved for the Magpies in recent weeks.

Murphy made headlines earlier this week for scoring a brilliant equaliser against Wolves.

The star rescued a point for his side at Molineux with a lovely free-kick to beat Rui Patricio.

The Chronicle say Newcastle are desperate not to lose the man they signed for £12 million in 2017 (BBC Sport) for nothing, but Gerrard is keeping a close eye on contract talks.

He is said to be hopeful of coming to a pre-contract agreement with the player in January.

TBR’s View – Murphy for free would be shrewd business

If Gerrard is able to get Murphy in for free ahead of 2021/22 then that would be a very astute bit of business.

Murphy is currently showing that he does have the ability to cut it in the Premier League and it is clear to see why Newcastle don’t want to lose him.

He would surely strengthen Rangers’ pool of wide options.

Aged just 25, Murphy still has a few years of developing to do before hitting his peak, meaning someone stands to benefit from his best years.
