Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is reportedly set to deal his former club Liverpool a blow in terms of their transfer plans.

According to The Daily Record, Rangers plan to hand a new contract to teenage sensation Josh McPake amid widespread interest in his signature.

McPake is wanted by Liverpool, Borussia Monchengladbach and AS Roma but Rangers are desperate to keep their wonderkid.

The 17-year-old has starred for Rangers’ academy team this season, including winning the man of the match award in the SFA Youth Cup final against Celtic recently.

Gerrard rates McPake highly but the young winger only has one year remaining on his contract after this season.

But Rangers are determined to hold onto the former Hibernian schoolboy, who is reportedly on the verge of a first-team promotion.

Liverpool are eyeing a swoop for the Scotland under-17 international to bolster their youth options.

But Gerrard, who is considered a legend at Anfield, would prefer to have McPake at Ibrox because he is one for the future.

This report adds that Gerrard might include him in his first-team before the end of the season to show the route to the first-team.

Liverpool have taken notice of McPake after he produced an impressive performance in a friendly against the Reds recently.

But the teenager will be offered a new deal by Rangers. It remains to be seen whether he will accept that or try to move elsewhere.
