Allan Saint-Maximin will miss Newcastle United’s trip to Crystal Palace, although the Daily Mail has reported that Steve Bruce was set to drop the star man anyway.
The French wizard has picked up a muscle injury in training and that means he won’t be considered for selection as the Magpies make the long trip to the capital.
Saint-Maximin wasn’t likely to be included, however, with Bruce unhappy with the 23-year-old’s recent lack of form.
The former Nice trickster was set to be dropped to the bench for the Palace game, although the decision has now been taken out of the boss’ hands.
Newcastle have lost back-to-back games in the Premier League and the Magpies are in desperate need of a positive result.
Saint-Maximin has started all eight Premier League games so far, scoring one goal and registering a single assist – which both came in the same game.
After last weekend’s 2-0 reverse at the hands of Chelsea, the youngster took some stick from club legend Alan Shearer.
He claimed in quotes printed by the Daily Mail: “Allan Saint-Maximin hasn’t broken a sweat since signing his new six-year contract.”
The versatile forward signed for the Toon Army for £17 million in the summer of 2019. His four goals and seven assists last season prompted the club to offer him a bumper contract extension.
TBR View – Saint-Maximin needs to step up
Bruce would have perhaps had a point by leaving the French forward out of his team for a game or two.
The £38,000-a-week wizard was mesmerising at times during 2019/20 but just hasn’t looked the same player this term.
Newcastle are in need of a run of form to boost them up the Premier League table and Bruce needs more from his star forward.
Perhaps Saint-Maximin is suffering under the weight of expectation on his shoulders but something has to change.
It would have been bold for Bruce to place him on the bench but it now looks as though that decision isn’t one for him to make.
