Tottenham Hotspur will consider an approach for England boss Gareth Southgate in the summer should Mauricio Pochettino decide to leave the club at the end of the season, according to a report from the Daily Star.

Plenty of questions have been asked about Pochettino’s future in recent times. Spurs reached the Champions League final last season and have challenged for the Premier League on numerous occasions during his tenure.

However, Tottenham have made an underwhelming start to this campaign. They have won just three of their opening nine games in all competitions and suffered a humiliating defeat in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

According to the Daily Star, there is a growing feeling that this season could be Pochettino’s last at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. And Southgate is the man that Daniel Levy wants to come in.

The Star reports that Levy was looking at Southgate this summer when Pochettino hinted at leaving. And the Premier League heavyweights are ready to have another look if the Argentine does move on.

The report notes that Southgate’s relationship with the raft of Spurs players who regularly feature in his England squads has helped his cause. But it is unclear whether he would be interested in taking the job.

Southgate would be an interesting choice. And despite his popularity, it would be no surprise if some Spurs fans were concerned about a potential appointment.

Of course, whoever replaces Pochettino faces an incredibly tough task. And there is no doubt that Southgate has done an amazing job with the Three Lions.

His record in club management however, is underwhelming. It is a decade next month since he left Middlesbrough. So it would be intriguing to see how he would get on at one of the country’s biggest clubs if he did take the job.

But the large majority of Tottenham fans will still be hoping that Levy does not need to worry about finding Pochettino’s successor for some time yet.
