Tottenham Hotspur are planning to step up their interest in Jannik Vestergaard following their latest result, with the Daily Express reporting that the Southampton star is set to cost around £18 million.
Spurs still have every chance of ending this campaign on a real high. They are just three points off the top four in the Premier League. And of course, they have a Carabao Cup final coming up.
However, there looks to be plenty of work ahead for Jose Mourinho. And their 2-2 draw with Newcastle on Sunday highlighted just how problematic their defensive issues are proving.
Tottenham made mistakes in the build up to both of the Magpies’ goals. They missed several opportunities to clear the ball before Joelinton broke the deadlock.
And Davinson Sanchez running into Joe Rodon presented Joe Willock with the chance to equalise late on.
According to the Daily Express, Mourinho now wants a move for Vestergaard to be fast-tracked. It is claimed that the Southampton man has an asking price of £18 million.
Vestergaard’s future with the Saints looks to be uncertain. The Express notes that his contract expires next summer. And according to a recent report from The Athletic, talks over an extension are yet to take place.
TBR View: Vestergaard move may not address Tottenham’s issues
If Spurs sign Vestergaard and he replicates the form that he has shown for much of this season, he could prove to be an outstanding signing.
Obviously, Tottenham fans will take confidence from the debut season enjoyed by the Dane’s former teammate Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
But there was a time when Saints supporters could have only dreamed about the idea of getting anything like £18 million for Vestergaard.
It has been some time since he really struggled in the Premier League. But those difficult times hint that it may be a gamble to put faith in Vestergaard being the answer to Tottenham’s defensive problems.
