Spurs have reportedly been pursuing Cristian Romero for a number of weeks.

Tottenham are currently bolstering their ranks ahead of the new season, eager to make amends for a lacklustre 2020-21.

Spurs brought in Fabio Paratici to lead negotiations with prospective targets and he’s hit the ground running.

However, it appears that talks between Tottenham and Romero’s club may have hit a stumbling block.

According to The Guardian, Atalanta are holding out for £47million, but Spurs are unwilling to pay that much for the 23-year-old.

And Sportitalia – via TEAMtalk – claims Barcelona are now preparing to enter negotiations over Romero.

Paratici has a plan B up his sleeve in case the Romero deal falls through.

This would consist of Takehiro Tomiyasu, Nikola Milenkovic and Kurt Zouma, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Romero has apparently agreed personal terms with Spurs already and seems keen on a move to N17.

The million dollar question now is – can Tottenham get the deal over the line?

It would be a shame if they were to miss out on Serie A’s defender of the year, a player Italian media labelled a “phenomenon”.

Spurs could sign “transformative” player

Alasdair Gold has predicted that Romero could transform the Tottenham backline right away were he to join.

“Cristian Romero is a superb player,” the football.london correspondent said on the Tottenham Talk Live Transfer Q&A last week.

“If Spurs can pull that one off I think they’d transform their defence with one player.

“As I understand it… Romero is the one (centre-back) he (Paratici) would like the most.

“So hopefully it will happen because it would be transformative.”
