Report: Spurs make contact to try and sign 'incredible' Liverpool target

Spurs have reportedly made contact over Houssem Aouar, a player who has also been linked with Liverpool and Arsenal.

ESPN has claimed that Tottenham are even willing to swap Tanguy Ndombele as part of the deal.

Spurs are looking to bolster their ranks ahead of a crucial Premier League season where they’re hoping to make amends for a poor 2020-21.

And new boss Nuno Espirito Santo has reportedly identified Aouar as a top target.

According to ESPN, Spurs have contacted Lyon with a proposal which includes the chance to re-sign Ndombele.

In addition, Aouar is reportedly keen on a move to the Premier League and has a price tag of around £21.5million.

Lyon haven’t responded to the offer yet but talks are apparently ongoing, added ESPN.

The same outlet recently claimed Liverpool and Manchester United have also joined the race for Aouar’s signature.

Meanwhile, Arsenal reportedly have a long-standing interest in the player, who Pep Guardiola once deemed “incredible (Sky Sports).

“Magnificent” Ndombele

Ndombele, who Spurs are reportedly looking to swap for Aouar, joined the north Londoners for just under £54million in 2019.

Admittedly, he struggled in his maiden season at Spurs but improved in 2020-21.

Former Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho hailed the 24-year-old’s “magnificent” performance at Sheffield United in January.

He also praised Ndombele’s desire to turn his career round.

“I coach for so many years, had so many players and I have enough experience to say and to feel that when a player is not playing very well, it’s his responsibility,” Mourinho told the Daily Mail at the time.

“And when a player turns things around and brings his performance level to a very high level, it’s also his responsibility.

“It’s a great example that with me the door is always open.

“The door of the team is always open, and when a player is not playing he has to try to understand why and he has to try to understand how can he walk through that door. He understood, he understood.

“The performance was magnificent and I’m really pleased that he’s come to this level.”

£54m player as a makeweight for a £21.5m player? – TBR View

Aouar is a top player, but offering Ndombele, who the club has paid big money for, doesn’t really make sense.

Likewise, would the 24-year-old really want to call time on his Spurs career and effectively become a makeweight?

If Lyon are really after just £21.5million, then it’s not a massive amount – surely Spurs could sell fringe players and raise funds that way?
