Tottenham Hotspur have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Nicolo Barella, according to a report from Italian outlet Calciomercato.
Barella has been a key player for Inter Milan this season. He has contributed five assists and scored two goals in Serie A for Antonio Conte’s men.
And it appears that his form is not going unnoticed. According to Calciomercato, both Spurs and Liverpool like the 23-year-old. It is noted that his contract expires in 2024.
As things stand, it seems highly unlikely that Barella will be on his way to the Premier League anytime soon.
He cost the Nerazzurri around £40 million when he joined permanently in 2019 (via Football Italia). So he is certainly not going to come cheap as he continues to impress at San Siro.
From the outside, it does appear that the Reds and Spurs are not pushing the boat out to strengthen their squads this month.
So perhaps they may be looking at a potential summer bid for the Italy international. And the signs suggest that he is going to be a fantastic player in the coming years.
But Spurs and Liverpool have had to deal with criticism over their creativity in recent times. Jurgen Klopp’s men have failed to score in their last three league games.
Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho’s side have had to settle for a number of frustrating draws in their recent league run.
Some of the criticism of both sides has certainly been unfair. But signing Barella at some stage further down the line would clearly be an exciting statement.
