Report: Spurs have offered 'one of the best players in the world' to Champions League club

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso remains linked with a move away from Spurs this summer.

However, finding a buyer to take the Argentine off Tottenham is proving difficult for the north Londoners.

Lo Celso spent the second half of last season on loan at Villarreal.

There have been reports claiming Tottenham were in talks with the La Liga club over a permanent move.

“Not an easy operation at all”

However, Villarreal CEO Roig Negueroles has claimed this is not the case.

Indeed, he claimed that the club is “not in a position” to work towards a permanent move for Lo Celso.

“We haven’t negotiated with Tottenham, we haven’t sat down with them to talk about anything for now,” he told AS, via Estadio Deportivo and Sport Witness.

“We know that the player is open to continuing, but we can’t sit down and talk about an operation like this without having exits.

“What is being talked about offers and so on is not true, there has been no negotiation. Nor have they offered us or asked for anything.

“As I have told you, it is a very complicated operation, they spent a lot of money on the player and it is not an easy operation at all.

“That said, with no exits and with the team we have, we are not in a position to carry out this operation.”

Estadio Deportivo also claimed that Tottenham have offered Lo Celso to Atletico Madrid ‘in recent weeks’.

And while there hasn’t been any progress on that front, it opens ‘another possibility’ for the midfielder to continue in Spain.

This is something Lo Celso would be happy to do after his fruitful spells with Real Betis and Villarreal.

“He improves us”

Earlier this year, Villarreal goalkeeper and fellow Argentine Geronimo Rulli gave Lo Celso some very high praise.

Speaking to Super Deporte, Rulli said: “He gives us an option as a team.

“He improves us, and I won’t be surprising many by saying that he is one of the best players in the world.

“I know him well as a player and as a person, so I hope he does very well.”

Atletico, one of Spain’s top teams and a regular Champions League competitor, would be a good fit for Lo Celso.

He’s unlikely to stay at Spurs, but he certainly deserves to join another top team.
