Report: Spurs have agreed £43m+ deal to sign Cristian Romero from Atalanta
Spurs have finally come to terms with Atalanta over a deal to bring Cristian Romero to the club, with a £43m plus add-ons deal agreed.
Romero has emerged as Fabio Paratici’s number one defensive target this summer. However, talks had threatened to break down over Atalanta’s insistence on getting big money for their star defender.
But Talksport now reports that Paratici has agreed to pay £43m for Romero and the defender is now expected to arrive in England before the season starts in two weeks’ time.
It had been suggested in midweek that Spurs were desperate to get the Romero deal over the line quickly. The club apparently want him available for the opening day clash with Manchester City. With a deal now agreed, personal terms aren’t expected to be a problem.
Nuno Santo will be delighted to get a new defender through the door after losing Toby Alderweireld last week. Romero is highly-regarded in Italy and Argentina.
While the £43m fee is a big one, it’s not quite a record deal for Spurs. Tanguy Ndombele remains their biggest outlay at around the £54m mark.
Statement signing from Paratici
The signings of Gollini and Bryan Gil were good ones, but Romero is the sort of next level signing the club needed. Paratici, it seems, has delivered here.
Romero will instantly improve the starting XI at Spurs, and that’s what Nuno Santo needed this summer. He has plenty of squad players, but Romero brings real quality to the ranks.
It’s also a message to the rest of the league that Spurs are not going away quietly. It’s now over £70m spent this summer, with more signings potentially to follow.
