Spurs could be set to challenge Leicester City for the signing of Inter Milan defender, Stefan De Vrij, according to a report from The Express today.

The Express, who city the Sunday Star in their claim, believe Spurs are keeping tabs on De Vrij, who is said to be in talks with Leicester City over a move to the Midlands.

The Foxes are desperate to land a new defender now, following the shocking injury to Wesley Fofana this week. De Vrij, 29, would fit the bill given his experience and quality.

Experience

The Dutchman has 49 caps for his country. He was also a key figure last season as Antonio Conte led Inter to the Scudetto.

The report claims that Inter value De Vrij around the £38m mark. But Leicester feel they can land him for £10m less, and are keen on getting a deal done quickly.

Spurs are said to be lying in wait, though, for if those talks with Leicester break down quickly. De Vrij is represented by Mino Raiola, who is well known for getting big deals done around the world.

Ideal defender for Spurs

The signing of Cristian Romero is a big one, but Spurs do need someone next to the Argentina star. Takehiro Tomiyasu is the main name being mentioned. However, no deal has been concluded as yet.

Someone like De Vrij would also be perfect. He has experience, quality, and crucially, a winning mentality from his title win last season.

The fire-sale at Inter is really something to behold at the moment. Spurs, then, need to make sure they’re ready to capitalise quickly.
