Southampton face a potential blow with the news that youngster, Alexandre Jankewitz, has handed in a transfer request at St Mary’s.
An exclusive report from The Athletic claims that Jankewitz has become frustrated with his lack of opportunities. The 19-year-old had hoped to be given a chance by Ralph Hassenhuttl, but has been left by the wayside.
And it seems Jankewitz has moved to take things into his own hands, by requesting a move. Although, for now anyway, the Saints are said to be reluctant to allow any sort of deal to happen.
The midfielder arrived in Southampton back in 2018 and will have been hopeful of a quick progression into the first-team. The Saints are renowned for developing young players.
However, he’s yet to appear in the Premier League, with just a couple of sporadic appearances in the FA Cup and EFL Trophy to his name.
Jankewitz, then, is seemingly looking for an exit as he seeks to push his career on further.
TBR View: Not like Southampton this but Jankewitz will have his reasons
It looks like another case of a player simply wanting to play football here. Even though Jankewitz is only 19, he obviously thinks he’s good enough to play right now.
It’s not like Southampton to let a young player slip through the net, mind. They’re normally spot on in their development of youngsters.
So it will be interesting to see if they allow a sale here, or dig their heels in and try and resolve with the teenage midfielder.
