Southampton are trying to sign Sporting Lisbon winger Jovane Cabral, according to a report from Portuguese outlet Record.
The Saints are trying to snare the forward from the clutches of West Ham United who are also thought to be vying for his signature this month.
Cabral looks like a highly-rated talent and contributed to nine goals last season; scoring six times and registering three assists.
Southampton are in desperate need of a lift to kick-start their 2020/21 campaign after a torrid time of things so far.
The Saints were defeated by Crystal Palace on the opening day and were then thrashed by Tottenham 5-2 during their first game at St Mary’s at the weekend.
Southampton could do with some more service to the likes of Danny Ings and Che Adams, with Cabral looking like a good candidate to do just that.
The 22-year-old has one cap for Cape Verde and is capable of operating on either flank or through the middle in the No.10 role.
Cabral is valued at £18.3 million and Southampton are hopeful of doing a deal for the player who was a Sporting standout when football returned in June.
Ralph Hasenhuttl will be desperate to lift Southampton into a top half finish this season after battling back to an 11th place finish during 2019/20.
In order to do that he will want to make sure he is well-stocked in all areas on the pitch – including in attack.
Cabral is quick, direct and has shown at Lisbon that he can weigh in with goals if given a run of games in the team.
Southampton might need to move quickly but he could prove a quality addition to Hasenhuttl’s ranks.
