Report: Southampton tried to sign £12m Liverpool player before deadline but he is impressing so much in training

Southampton tried to sign central defender Nat Phillips on loan from Liverpool before the transfer window closed.

The Athletic report that in their hunt to improve their backline, the Saints turned to the Englishman before signing Duje Caleta-Car.

Caleta-Car has ironically previously been a target for Liverpool, who also had interest from Benfica in signing Phillips on loan.

That would have offered the prospect of Champions League football but he was kept around as backup amid a spate of defensive injuries.

Southampton wanted Phillips from Liverpool

The report says that Phillips was up for sale for around £12 million when the transfer window opened and expected to leave.

He had helped Bournemouth back into the Premier League during his time on loan there and thought the Cherries would bid.

They didn’t initially, preferring other targets and by the time they came back to the table, Liverpool decided to keep him as cover.

The report says that Phillips’ attitude in training has been hugely impressive despite the fact he knows he may not play much.

Being kept around as cover must be slightly frustrating and if everything goes to plan for Jurgen Klopp, Phillips will not play much.

Perhaps he will be allowed to go in January once the injury situation has made itself clearer and it remains to be seen if Southampton, Benfica, Bournemouth or any other suitor will come back in.
