According to the Express, Southampton are closing in on Sporting Lisbon right-back Cedric Soares. Saints manager Ronald Koeman is expected to act quickly to land the Lisbon defender, considering uncertainty over the long-term future of England international Nathaniel Clyne.
Clyne, who broke into the Three Lions set-up with his first cap this season, is reportedly a target of both Liverpool and Manchester United. He made 35 Premier League appearances for the St. Mary’s outfit this term, contributing with two goals and 22 key passes down the right-flank.
Reported at £3.6million, the arrival of Soares is predicted to be the signal that will set in motion Clyne’s summer sale. Any deal for the Portugal international with allow the aforementioned North West duo to step up their interest in the 24-year-old. Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool have already had a £10million bid rejected by the Saints, as per BBC Sport.
Soares, who is also a target for Stoke City, came through the ranks at Sporting Lisbon and has since made 67 league appearances for the club. Having made seven European appearances this term, his experience on the continent could prove very useful as the Saints look to challenge in the Europa League.
