Report: Southampton striker Guido Carrillo close to Leganes return

Negotiations are ongoing between Southampton and Leganes as striker Guido Carrillo nears the exit door. According to Spanish media outlet Marca, Leganes are close to completing a deal to bring Carrillo back.

The La Liga side had Carrillo on loan last season and he scored six times in 33 games. Leganes want Carrillo back but the two sides need to compromise to get this over the line.

Southampton want to sell Carrillo permanently but Leganes cannot afford his asking price. With two years left on his contract, Southampton want more than £9m for Carrillo.

Leganes will not match their price so they are asking for a loan deal instead. This looks like the most feasible outcome as the two clubs continue to discuss this deal. This transfer could be completed before the European transfer window shuts.

TBR’s verdict

Southampton might have to cut their losses on this one. Carrillo arrived for club-record £19m fee but he has played just 10 times and hasn’t scored. The 28-year-old does not feature in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans and he seems keen on a return to Leganes.

The Saints risk missing out on this deal if they continue to demand a price that Leganes cannot afford. For the sake of the Argentine striker’s career, he needs to be pushing for this move.
