Report: Southampton see loan bid for Liverpool's Neco Williams rejected
Southampton have failed in a late attempt to sign Neco Williams on loan from Liverpool, according to Sky Sports’ live transfer blog (1/2; 19:59).
The Saints have been linked with a number of full-backs in this window. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men lack options in that area of the field.
Southampton have suffered without Kyle Walker-Peters in the last two games. Yan Valery struggled against Arsenal, and it was James Ward Prowse who started at right-back against Aston Villa.
So it is no surprise to see the Saints prioritise a move for a new full-back in the final hours before the deadline. And it appears that their search prompted them to reach out to the champions.
Sky Sports has reported on their live transfer blog (1/2; 19:59) that Southampton approached the Reds about taking Williams on loan for the rest of the season.
However, it has been reported that Liverpool snubbed the offer. It is claimed that Jurgen Klopp does not want to let Williams leave given the cover that he provides to Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Liverpool, of course, remain in the Champions League. And it is no secret that they have endured a torrid time with injuries at the back this season.
With Walker-Peters one of the most impressive performers in the Southampton squad this season, it seems unlikely that the Saints would have been able to provide any assurances over game-time.
So you could understand why the offer did not appeal to Liverpool.
