Southampton have sent scouts to have a look at Sassuolo-owned striker Gianluca Scamacca, according to a report from Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men look to be in a reasonable position heading into the final stages of the Premier League season. They sit seven points clear of the bottom three.

Of course, there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding what will happen over the coming months. But the Saints can arguably be fairly confident that they will be playing top flight football next season – whenever it starts.

And perhaps Hasenhuttl may be looking to add a striker to his ranks this summer.

TuttoMercatoWeb has reported that Scamacca has been scouted by the south coast side. It is noted that AC Milan have been monitoring the 21-year-old for some time.

Scamacca has been out on loan this season. He is Ascoli’s top goalscorer in Serie B, with seven strikes for the relegation-threatened side. He has also provided one assist.

His record during his club career had been fairly underwhelming up until this season. And that may concern some Saints fans, who have seen the club make some disappointing signings in recent years.

But his record at various youth levels for Italy is outstanding. He has scored 20 goals in 35 appearances since making his debut for their under-18 side.

It should be noted that it was also TuttoMercatoWeb who suggested last summer that Southampton had agreed a fee for Moussa Djenepo.

So it will be interesting if anything comes of the links with Scamacca this time around.
