Report: Southampton rival West Brom for Troy Deeney
Southampton are one of three Premier League sides keen on signing Troy Deeney before the transfer window shuts on Friday, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror (11/10; page 73).
Deeney remains available to top flight clubs in the final days of the window. He has barely featured for the Hornets this term, and looks set to be offered the chance to make an immediate return to the highest level.
According to the Sunday Mirror (11/10; page 73), the Saints want the 32-year-old. But Brighton and Hove Albion and West Brom are also keen on the striker.
It is not clear how much Deeney’s admirers may have to pay. But if he is not going to play, it surely makes sense for Watford to welcome offers.
He is likely to be earning a considerable wage given his importance to the club in recent years. And Vladimir Ivic may want those funds to strengthen other areas of his squad.
TBR View: Deeney could be a smart signing for Southampton
Deeney is arguably not a signing that will capture the imagination of Southampton fans. But he could certainly play a role for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men if he joined.
He is a proven goalscorer in the Premier League. He is also a leader, and a player rivals may not relish coming up against.
The major fear for many Saints fans is surely losing Danny Ings for any significant period of time. Theo Walcott did arrive this week, but he looks set to bolster their wide options.
Deeney is not as prolific as Ings has recently been by any means. But he will almost certainly score goals, so could be a good option alongside the likes of Che Adams, Shane Long, and Michael Obafemi.
