Southampton’s hopes of landing Ruben Loftus-Cheek on loan appear to have been handed a significant boost, with The Sun on Sunday (4/10; page 59) reporting that Chelsea prepared to cover more than half of his wages.
The Saints have endured a quiet summer. And it has been some time since their supporters had a new signing to talk about with the club having done much of their business in the early stages of the window.

But it appears that they may not be done yet.
According to The Sun on Sunday (4/10; page 59), the Saints are interested in either Loftus-Cheek or Nice midfielder Wylan Cyprien.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are doing their best to secure a loan move for Loftus-Cheek. The report claims that they are prepared to cover £100,000-a-week of his £173,000-a-week wages.

It is noted that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are not the only club considering a move for the Englishman.
TBR View: Southampton should take advantage of opportunity
Despite Chelsea paying most of his wages, Loftus-Cheek will still not come cheap. Using Spotrac’s figures, the midfielder would still be the Saints’s second-highest paid player behind Danny Ings.
Nevertheless, Southampton can hardly afford to let the window shut without more new faces coming in.
A loan move may not be ideal. But Loftus-Cheek is a player with a lot of ability. So perhaps Southampton should take the gamble with his parent club prepared to cover most of the cost.
