Southampton are reportedly ready to make an opening bid of £8.5 million for defender Mohammed Salisu – meaning the competition is on for Everton and Newcastle.
According to a report from Pucela Fichajes, the towering Ghanaian centre-half has become the subject of interest for the Saints, who have struggled defensively so far this season.
Seemingly Ralph Hasenhuttl is keen to bolster his backline, which can help his improving side build.
The development may come as a blow to Everton and Newcastle who have both been casting their eye over the 20-year-old according to a previous report from Pucela.
Everton are currently lacking central defenders after failing to sign Kurt Zouma permanently last summer, and may see Salisu as an option.
With Southampton readying their bid though, the Toffees may have to get a move on if they are keen.
TBR’s view – Everton and Newcastle should challenge
One would imagine both the Toffees and the Magpies have the money to outbid Southampton.
£8.5 million isn’t much at all in football today, and Everton and Newcastle surely have the capacity to fight the Saints for the impressive youngster.
Everton in particular really need defensive reinforcements. Salisu hasn’t been on the scene long and a move for him would be a gamble, but there’s no doubting his potential and he could be a great fit in the Premier League.
