Steve Cooper would be the top target for Southampton if they have to replace Ralph Hasenhuttl in the future, according to The Sun on Sunday (12/9; page 60).

Hasenhuttl is one of the longer-serving managers in the Premier League. But it has been a couple of difficult years for the Austrian.

The club certainly seemed to be making a lot of progress under his leadership initially. They were top of the Premier League at one stage last season.

However, it does not appear to have been the easiest job. Before signing a lot of young players in the summer, it did seem that the Saints had lost their way somewhat.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Hasenhuttl. But it does appear that the club have a plan in place should he leave.

According to The Sun on Sunday (12/9; page 60), Cooper would be their top target. It is noted that he previously worked with the club’s director of football operations Matt Crocker.

Cooper is currently unemployed after leaving Swansea.

Cooper a good option for Southampton after building young squad

It was an interesting time for Cooper at the Liberty Stadium. He delivered two play-off finishes in the Championship.

But it did seem that plenty of supporters were ready for his departure by the time his exit was confirmed.

He did win a lot of plaudits for his work with England’s under-16s and under-17s. He led the latter to World Cup glory in 2017.

And it appears that the Saints would like him to come in and work with their exciting squad should they lose Hasenhuttl.
