Southampton have launched a mammoth bid for a winger ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports in the Belgian media. Le Soir claims Southampton have bid €23.5m (around £20m) for Standard Liege winger Moussa Djenepo.
Ralph Hasenhuttl is likely to shuffle his pack this summer after spending nothing in January. The Austrian kept Southampton up but needs reinforcements to move higher up the league table.
Djenepo has been identified as a potential target. The young winger has been impressing at Standard Liege this summer – enough to convince Southampton to launch a big-money bid.
This season, the 8-cap Mali international has played 38 games, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists. These tallies include three goals in five Europa League games and seven goals in the Jupiler Pro League, which is Belgium’s top-flight.
These performances have not gone unnoticed. Southampton want to bring Djenepo from Belgium over to the south coast of England for next season.
Negotiations between Southampton and Standard Liege have already taken place. And Southampton have reportedly firmed up their interest with a concrete offer already.
Djenepo is far from the finished article but he is considered to be a promising young player in Belgium. The 20-year-old is likely to be a man in demand this summer so the Saints are stepping up their hunt to get this deal done.
