Report: Southampton leading race for English defender, despite Newcastle enquiry

Eurosport have claimed that Southampton are leading the charge for Manchester United defender Brandon Williams this month as the Saints look to secure a loan move for the defender – despite recent reports of an enquiry made by Newcastle United.

Williams, 20, is expected to leave Manchester United on loan this month after falling behind the likes of Luke Shaw and Alex Telles in his preferred left-back role. He has been used as cover for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but he needs game time to further his development.

Already clocking up 42 appearances for United, the England Under-21 international is showing plenty of promise with some aggressive, but quality performances. Eurosport say Southampton are ‘in the driving seat’ for Williams, ahead of Sheffield United.

However, it comes after the Chronicle claimed Newcastle had made an enquiry to sign Williams from Steve Bruce’s former side – and that The Toon were confident of securing a deal for the left-sided defender. He is currently earning a huge £65,000 a week (Spotrac).

TBR’s view – Which team needs Williams more?

Southampton need a left-back. They boast little cover for England international Ryan Bertrand, and Williams would offer the ex-Chelsea star plenty of competition on the left side of the defence. But it is questionable whether he would start.

At Newcastle, Williams is likely to start above Paul Dummett while Matt Ritchie is preferred as a midfielder and summer signing Jamal Lewis is currently injured. Either side would benefit Williams’ development, but Newcastle might get him more game time.
