Report: Southampton keen to build on £9m deal, Hasenhuttl wants rival for £23,000-per-week regular

Southampton want to build on the imminent arrival of Brest defender Romain Perraud by signing another full-back this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The Saints are close to completing a deal for Perraud to move to St Mary’s for £9million. The club had identified the Frenchman as their top target to replace Ryan Bertrand ahead of his contract expiring.

Bertrand will leave Southampton at the end of the month after spending six seasons on the south coast. He leaves a big gap in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans, having featured 29 times in the Premier League last season. A calf injury cut short his campaign in April.

Southampton appear to have beaten Leeds United to Perraud’s services. The Whites had coveted his signature at Elland Road, per L’Equipe, who expect the Saints to pay in excess of €12m (£10.5m) for the 23-year-old.

But the Daily Mail claim Hasenhuttl has no plans to stop strengthening his full-back options with the arrival of Perraud. Instead, the Austrian wants to sign a player capable of rivalling the Brest star and right-back Kyle Walker-Peters next season.

Hasenhuttl is keen to have an option who is capable of playing at both left and right-back. Walker-Peters has held down the right-sided role since joining from Tottenham Hotspur on an initial loan in January 2020.

The £23,000-per-week defender has featured 40 times in the Premier League for Southampton, including 30 since completing a £12m permanent switch in August.

Southampton have unenvious task after Perraud deal

Hasenhuttl has given Southampton an unenvious task by wanting to sign a backup for Perraud and Walker-Peters. The Saints will struggle to find a defender who fits the bill and is open to accepting they’re second choice.

It could prove expensive to sign a player better than Perraud or Walker-Peters, though. The former Spurs right-back was one of Southampton’s most consistent performers last season. He offered a heavy attacking presence at St Mary’s, even if sometimes defensively lacking.

Perraud will match that attacking force from the left next term, if signed. The Brest star offered three goals and seven assists in 36 Ligue 1 appearances last season. He scored and assisted against eventual champions Lille, as well.
