Report: Southampton interested in signing Anderlecht wonderkid Yari Verschaeren

Yari Verschaeren made his debut against Scotland.

Southampton are interested in signing one of Europe’s hottest prospects. According to Calciomercato, Anderlecht teenager Yari Verschaeren is on Southampton’s radar.

Ralph Hasenhuttl is still tinkering with his squad to get the best out of his players. This summer, he landed a handful of new signings, including Moussa Djenepo, Che Adams and Kevin Danso.

But Southampton’s recruitment does not stop there. The Saints are still on the look-out for talent and Verschaeren is the latest to catch the eye. Southampton might launch a move for the youngster ahead of the January window.

Verschaeren plays for Anderlecht in the Belgian top-flight, alongside ex-Manchester City star Vincent Kompany. The 18-year-old has played six times this season, including five starts.

In total, the teenager has racked up 28 Anderlecht appearances already in his short career, scoring twice and providing four assists. He is a versatile attacking midfielder, who can also play in central midfield.

The Belgium starlet also won his first senior cap in the recent European qualifier against Scotland. Roberto Martinez showed just how highly he rates Verschaeren by giving him a run-out on the international stage.

TBR’s view

He might be young and he might be small but Verschaeren is one to watch out for. It will not be long before he becomes a household name so Southampton must try to sign him before he takes his game to the next level.

Verschaeren offers a blend of youth and experience. With 28 first-team games already under his belt, he has shown he can compete in senior football. He is only going to get better so this might be worth the investment for Southampton.
