Southampton transfer: Saints confident over Manchester United talent
Southampton are growing in confidence that they can complete a deal to sign Manchester United talent Brandon Williams, according to The Athletic.
The defender is keen to play regular football and the Saints have been interested in the 20-year-old for some time. Talks have now progressed with the two clubs, although there is some work to do.
One stumbling block could be the fee. United will demand a payment in order to take the youngster on loan; something which isn’t uncommon for the Red Devils.
Williams was a rarely-seen player in the United ranks last season. He featured just 14 times for the first team during 2020/21 and fell behind Luke Shaw and Alex Telles in the pecking order.
In total he has made 50 appearances for United, scoring one goal and registering three assists. He is highly rated by the club, although his chances of regular game time right now are slim.
Interestingly the Saints have already landed a left-back this summer. Romain Perraud has joined from Stade Brest 29 to bolster the defensive ranks.
Southampton would be required to pay the £65,000-a-week salary in full. At this stage, it’s unclear exactly how much United would expect to recoup in the way of a loan fee.
Williams is wanted to cover both full-back positions. Ralph Hasenhuttl would hand the youngster the chance to hold down each position if he arrives at St Mary’s Stadium.
Williams to Southampton: Youngster would be decent Saints addition
United have some talented players and Williams is way down the pecking order at Old Trafford. As a result, a move to the Saints would make sense.
Hasenhuttl isn’t blessed with the biggest squad and having a player who can fill both full-back positions in his squad would be ideal.
Williams is a future United star. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rates him highly, although regular game time is a must for his development.
Southampton will hope to improve this season and Williams is the type of signing who could help kick them up the table.
