Southampton are planning to test West Brom’s resolve to keep Sam Johnstone by making a January move for the Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham target, according to a report from The Sun.
Johnstone is attracting a lot of attention ahead of the upcoming windows. It comes after he enjoyed a hugely impressive year in the Premier League with the Baggies.

Of course, that season ended in relegation back to the Championship. But Johnstone’s stock remains high.
He remains in the England fold – starting Saturday’s 5-0 win over Andorra – and his contract expires next year.
The Sun reports that West Ham and Spurs want the 28-year-old when he becomes a free agent. And obviously, West Brom would like to extend his terms.

But Southampton are looking to make the first move. It is claimed that the Saints plan to make a bid in January.
The Sun reports that Johnstone is happy to see out his deal at the Hawthorns. So Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men have a job on their hands to get a transfer across the line.
Johnstone better off snubbing Southampton offer with Tottenham and West Ham lurking
As things stand, it looks set to be a tricky season for the Saints. They are still awaiting their first league win of the campaign.
With that in mind, Johnstone would surely be forgiven for wanting to stay with Valerien Ismael’s side until the summer.
The last thing he will want is to move in January and find himself in a potential relegation scrap.
With Tottenham and West Ham in the mix, Johnstone has every reason to wait until the summer when all the power is in his hands.
