Southampton and West Ham United are monitoring Matty Longstaff’s situation as the midfielder heads into the final days of his Newcastle United contract, according to the Daily Star.

Longstaff’s future on Tyneside looks to have a major question mark hanging over it. The Daily Star reports that he is considering leaving St James’ Park amid concerns that his development could stagnate.

Newcastle’s hopes of keeping the 20-year-old will not have been helped by the level of interest in him.

The Daily Star has suggested that Schalke have joined Udinese in the race for his signature. But there are also a host of English sides tracking his situation.

The report notes that Watford also want Longstaff. But there is competition from the Saints, Hammers and Burnley.

TBR View: Move could be coup for West Ham or Southampton

It remains to be seen what decision Longstaff makes on his career. But it would arguably be a coup for the likes of West Ham or Southampton if they could be the ones to tempt him away from Newcastle.

He is a somewhat unproven talent. He has only made nine Premier League appearances this term.

But given his contract situation, it could prove to be a good piece of business to bring him in this summer.

However, with plenty of admirers, winning the race to land Longstaff will seemingly not be easy.
