Report: Southampton and Crystal Palace chase Joakim Maehle

Southampton are considering making a fresh move for Joakim Maehle during the January transfer window with doubts over Cedric’s long-term future at St Mary’s, according to a report from Sky Sports.

January is going to be a crucial month for the Saints. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men are in the relegation zone on goal difference and have lost their last two games.

Sky Sports reports that Hasenhuttl is looking to make additions across the backline. He wants a new right-back and is open to bringing in a centre-back and left-back. It is also suggested that he could look for more power in midfield.

One right-back target is Maehle, according to Sky Sports. The report suggests that Southampton tried to sign the 22-year-old last January, and he has since signed a new long-term contract at Genk.

Nevertheless, Saints are keen, and Sky Sports adds that Crystal Palace are also considering a move for the youngster.

TBR View – Gamble for Southampton?

It is not clear how much Southampton will be willing to spend in January. But it is perhaps a surprise that a right-back is one of their key targets.

Neither Cedric or Yan Valery have been particularly impressive this season, but it does look to be something of a roll of the dice to back Maehle to be a significant upgrade during the remaining months of the campaign.

He has played in the Champions League this season. And the summer acquisition of Moussa Djenepo should leave the Southampton fans with cautious optimism about the players linked with being brought in from Belgium. But he will have a point to prove if he does join.

Southampton need any January signings to hit the ground running immediately. Maehle may prove to be an inspired signing in time. But the Saints fans would be forgiven for being most concerned about the club making signings who look a safe bet to make an immediate impact.
