The Telegraph claim that Newcastle United’s new owners have discussed six English players – and are ‘confident’ of making early waves in January.

Newcastle are coming under increasing pressure on the pitch with the club still last – and Eddie Howe picking up two points from his first possible nine.

With that on-the-pitch pressure comes expectancy from fans of the owners to do business in January, in order to keep the club in the Premier League.

The Telegraph report that Amanda Staveley and co. are ‘confident’ of striking some deals early in the window. Plenty of work has been done.

The report names six English players that have been discussed in the board room, five of which are internationals – five in the Premier League.

They include England stars Kieran Trippier, Jesse Lingard, Ross Barkley, James Tarkowski, Harry Winks and uncapped Nat Phillips.

Of the six, which are most likely to join Newcastle in January?

Newcastle need a right-back and Trippier is said to be keen on a return to the Premier League from Atletico Madrid. That is a possibility.

Nat Phillips is completely out of the reckoning at Liverpool and the chance to join a Premier League side will be tempting. Similar for Barkley.

Harry Winks is expected to want to fight it out at Tottenham and Spurs will surely keep him until a replacement is signed. Lingard is out of contract.

But he might want to remain at Manchester United to see what his game time is like under Ralf Rangnick. Sean Dyche wants to keep Tarkowski.
