The Daily Mail has claimed that newly-promoted Sheffield United want to sign Rangers striker Jermain Defoe and Aston Villa loanee Scott Hogan on a permanent basis this summer.
Blades boss Chris Wilder wants new fire power to help his side remain in the Premier League next season, after pipping Leeds to join Norwich City in the automatic promotion slots.
Defoe, 36, has scored seven goals and created seven more since joining Rangers in January. He is on loan at Ibrox from Bournemouth until the end of the 2019-20 season, though the Blades were linked during the last window.
Hogan – a £12million signing by Villa from Brentford – has failed to get going with the Midlands side but has provided solid back-up to Billy Sharp. He scored last time out in the 2-0 win over Ipswich Town.
Sheffield United do have a multitude of strikers. Captain Sharp has scored 24 goals this season, while David McGoldrick has also netted 15 times. But in the Premier League, it is a different kettle of fish.
Defoe is an excellent signing for any club in the bottom half of the Premier League – if he is going to play consistently. At Bournemouth, Callum Wilson is preferred, and it saw Defoe struggle to gain any momentum.
Now the wrong side of his mid-thirties, 57-time England international Defoe is a top striker but needs to be first choice. It is a different story for Hogan, though, who simply is not good enough for the top tier.
Just 10 goals in 61 appearances for Villa and two in eight for the Blades is not good enough for the Premier League.
