According to a report from The Sun, Jose Mourinho has told friends that he expects to be offered the Real Madrid job if Zinedine Zidane goes, but he may not accept due to his interest in the Tottenham Hotspur post.
Mauricio Pochettino’s future continues to look uncertain. Spurs have not won a league game since September. They went into the international break 11 points off the top four, and just six from the relegation zone.
It would still be a major surprise if Daniel Levy decided to sack the Argentinian. Tottenham have moved to the cusp of domestic and European greatness during his time in charge. So he will surely be given the time to turn their fortunes around.
But it appears that Mourinho is ready to step in if required. The Sun reports that the Portuguese believes that he will be offered the chance to return to the Bernabeu if Zidane goes.
However, the report adds that he has told friends that he may not return to Los Blancos because of the uncertainty at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs’ season has not been good enough. Nevertheless, Tottenham will surely need to be doing a lot worse for a lot longer to make Pochettino’s position untenable.
He could, of course, decide to walk away himself. But it currently seems difficult to imagine Levy deciding to sack Pochettino before reaching out to Mourinho to come in as his replacement.
