Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is planning to wait to see where Southampton end up at the end of the season before deciding whether to sign a new contract, according to a report from the Daily Echo that may interest Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal supporters.

Sky Sports reported ahead of the final hours of the January transfer window that Hojbjerg was set to be a key target for Spurs in the summer, while the Gunners were also monitoring the Dane.

The Daily Echo reports that Hojbjerg is out of contract at St Mary’s at the end of next season. And unsurprisingly, the Saints are keen to keep their captain beyond 2021.

However, Hojbjerg is not rushing into making a decision on his future.

The Daily Echo has suggested that he is holding off signing with Southampton until the season has concluded. He reportedly wants to get a better idea of what direction the club is moving in before committing his future.

TBR View – Hojbjerg will give Saints every chance to convince him to stay

It would appear that the ball is very much in Southampton’s court. The Echo notes that he had an important role in Matt Crocker’s appointment as the club’s director of football operations in 2019.

And with Hojbjerg wearing the armband for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men, he may well be ready to give the Saints every chance to show the ambition in the summer that convinces him to commit his future.

But the likes of Spurs and Arsenal can arguably take plenty of encouragement. He will only have one year left on his contract should he snub fresh talks.

So Southampton may feel forced to sell should he make it clear that he does not plan to extend his stay. And given his contract situation, Arsenal and Spurs may perhaps be tempted to try their luck for a cut-price deal.
