Aston Villa will have to be prepared to pay at least £2 million if they want to lure Steven Gerrard away from Ibrox, with The Telegraph reporting that an approach for the Rangers boss is set to be made this week.

Gerrard looks to be the Villans’ top target as they continue their search for Dean Smith’s successor.

And it appears that the Englishman is ready to listen to what Villa have to offer.

The Telegraph reports that Gerrard is interested in speaking to the Villans.

Villa want their new man in place by next Monday. And it is claimed in the report that they are hopeful of being able to convince Gerrard to leave the Gers.

The report notes that Rangers would want at least £2 million in compensation, with Gary McAllister and Michael Beale potentially following the 41-year-old out of Ibrox.

However, Villa would have no problem meeting those demands.

The Villans are prepared in case Gerrard opts to stay. The Telegraph reports that Roberto Martinez is seen as an alternative target.

Gerrard being open to Aston Villa talks looks ominous for Rangers

Of course, Gerrard could ultimately decide to stay put. But it does look to be an ominous sign that he is reportedly open to going.

Obviously, the full picture will only become clear once discussions have been held. But it is clear the kind of potential the Villans have.

They spent big in the summer after losing Jack Grealish. And they have made a lot of progress since the owners came in.

It is a club with a bright future ahead. So it is hard to see what Villa could really say to put Gerrard off if they do get around the negotiating table.
