Declan Gallagher is desperate to not play the six games that would trigger a one-year extension on his contract, with the Daily Record reporting that the defender wants to join Celtic.
Gallagher is attracting plenty of attention with his current terms set to expire in the summer. The Daily Record claims that Celtic are one of several sides monitoring his situation.
Aberdeen, Hibernian and Blackburn are all reportedly admirers. But it appears that the 29-year-old has his sights on one particular move.
The Record claims that he wants to move to Parkhead a decade after leaving the club as a youngster. But there is a potential problem for the Hoops.
The report adds that Gallagher has a clause in his contract that means that his deal will automatically gain another year should he make another six appearances this season.
It is suggested that Gallagher is desperate to avoid triggering another year.
And it does appear that Celtic are looking at a move in this window. The Record notes how Neil Lennon is looking for cover with Christopher Jullien injured and Nir Bitton suspended.
TBR View: Celtic need inspired window with title hopes looking bleak
You could understand if Celtic fans were writing off their title hopes after the weekend. They now sit 19 points adrift. They do have three games in hand. But they certainly have a mountain to climb.
Lennon’s men had been on a much better run before Saturday’s defeat. And that may provide them with reason for very cautious optimism.
But an inspired January is required. And strengthening in the defence appears to be a must.
Gallagher is seemingly hoping that he is the answer to their problems.
