According to The Athletic, Everton had concerns about appointing Nuno Espirito Santo over fears about what going for a Jorge Mendes client would mean for their recruitment – in a view that may interest Spurs fans.

Both the Toffees and Tottenham ended their managerial searches on the same day this week.

Rafa Benitez was confirmed as the new Everton boss on Wednesday afternoon. A few hours later, Nuno’s arrival in North London was announced.

However, events could have easily played out differently.

According to The Athletic, Nuno held talks with Everton about the Goodison Park post. He was a front-runner at one stage, reports claim.

However, amid speculation Nuno may arrive on Merseyside, plans suddenly seemed to change. Benitez became the favourite. And the path was left clear for the 47-year-old to take the Spurs gig.

And according to The Athletic, one of the worries centred around Nuno being represented by Mendes.

There were concerns about what the connection would mean for Everton’s recruitment. It is also noted that he was not as impressive during talks as his supporters at the club hoped he would be.

Will Everton be vindicated or made to rue Nuno stance by Spurs?

It will be fascinating to see how Nuno fares at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. There will be several Premier League sides keeping a close eye.

Of course, Spurs will hope he is a huge success. Everton meanwhile, will be wary of their stance coming back to haunt them.

Wolves are pursuing a different direction after his tenure. And Crystal Palace also held talks with the retired goalkeeper.

Spurs’ path to Nuno was anything but straightforward. They were linked with a raft of names. And they seemingly came close to appointing several.

He has a point to prove – and not just to Tottenham.
