A report from The Times has offered an update on Mesut Ozil’s future, claiming that Arsenal still expect the 32-year-old to stay until the summer before heading to Major League Soccer.

Ozil’s future has been up in the air for some time. He has been out of the fold for much of Mikel Arteta’s tenure. He has not featured in any competition so far this season.

As noted by The Times, his contract expires at the end of the season. And his £350,000-a-week wages are proving problematic as the Gunners look to offload him.

Turkish outlet DHA Spor claimed on Wednesday that he had actually signed a three-and-a-half year deal with Fenerbahce, with Arsenal set to pay his wages for the rest of this season.

However, The Times’s report has suggested that that would not be the case.

They suggest that Fener are not able to afford his wages. And as things stand, Arsenal believe that Ozil is going nowhere until the summer.

The Times reports that he is likely to then head to America. DC United are interested. But no deal has been agreed.

TBR View: Ozil’s future could remain source of frustration for Arteta

Of course, it always looked set to be a difficult task for Arsenal to offload Ozil this month. His wages mean that only a handful of clubs worldwide can afford him.

So it can hardly be described as a setback that Arsenal believe that he is still set to stay for the coming months. But it may still be incredibly frustrating for Arteta.

Freeing up £350,000-a-week could potentially leave the door open for arguably two or three marquee additions to the wage bill.

Unfortunately, despite all of the talk surrounding his future, it appears that Arsenal are not expecting any movement this month.
