Report shares Aitor Karanka's role in Arvin Appiah's Nottingham Forest exit
According to a report from The Sun on Sunday (15/9; page 63), Almeria reached out to Aitor Karanka before making an £8 million move for Arvin Appiah, and the former Nottingham Forest boss is now being lined up to work with the teenager once again.
Karanka left the Championship club back in January. They were in seventh place when he departed, but ultimately finished in ninth spot, eight points off the play-off places in the second tier.
There may have been some frustration surrounding Karanka’s departure, but the Forest fans appear to have regained their optimism after Martin O’Neill’s poor tenure.
Sabri Lamouchi’s appointment in the summer was an intriguing one. But Forest have not lost in the league since the opening day, and they made a statement at the weekend as they went to league leaders Swansea City and won 1-0.
One of the most interesting decisions of Lamouchi’s tenure so far was the call to let Appiah head to Spain. The attacker was one of the most exciting young talents on the club’s books, and it remains to be seen whether £8 million proves to be a good piece of business.
It appears that one of their former bosses would say that Almeria have got the better end of the deal. The Sun on Sunday (15/9; page 63) reported the Spanish side consulted Karanka before making the move.
Interestingly, the report adds that the former Middlesbrough boss is on their radar as they look for a manager. So he could soon be working with Appiah once again.
It is going to be a long time before Forest fans can definitively say whether £8 million for Appiah was a good piece of business.
But Lamouchi’s tenure has arguably given the supporters reason to be extremely optimistic about their own fortunes. They have faced all of the current top three in the Championship and are unbeaten. They have taken five points from those games.
There was also the 3-0 thrashing of Derby in the Carabao Cup last month. Forest certainly have the chance to put themselves in the promotion mix this year.
Karanka’s departure may have left some disappointed. But perhaps, what happens at the City Ground during Lamouchi’s time in charge could ensure that few Forest fans are that bothered about Karanka’s next move or whether Appiah proves to be a success with Almeria.
