Report: Senior figures at Spurs are now talking about signing Mohamed Simakan

According to The Times, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing RB Leipzig defender Mohamed Simakan in the January transfer window.

It is no secret at all that Antonio Conte wants his side strengthened in the winter window. He’s said to be looking for a new player in attack, midfield and defence, and Simakan is the man being discussed to fill in at the back.

Senior figures at Spurs are now talking about signing Mohamed Simakan

Tottenham have not been playing well at all this season, but they’re still in a very respectable position – fourth in the league and on top of their Champions League group.

Conte is one of the biggest reasons why they are where they are, but as good as the Italian is, he’s no magician. He needs support from the club in the next transfer window, and a new defender is high on his wish list.

The report claims that Conte is very keen to sign Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan. He would be perfect for Spurs, but people at the top at Tottenham are reportedly discussing a move for Simakan, who is a very promising defender himself.

The Frenchman is still only 22, but he’s very highly rated in Germany and in his home country. He has even been compared to Manchester United star Raphael Varane, which is a massive compliment (L’Equipe).

A big move for Simakan is surely right around the corner, and if Tottenham’s senior figures really want him, they could be able to lure him away from Leipzig in the winter window.

However, Simakan will not be cheap. His current contract runs till the summer of 2026, which puts Leipzig in a really strong position in potential transfer negotiations.

He’s very aggressive

The RB Leipzig defender Tottenham fans have been dreaming of for well over a year is Josko Gvardiol. He is a phenomenal centre-half, but it’ll be really difficult for Spurs to get him.

Simakan, however, is a more realistic option. He would be a very good addition at Tottenham as well, and if Conte needs any more assurances over how good he is, a quick phone call to Leeds boss Jesse Marsch should do the trick.

The American, who worked with Simakan at Leipzig, once said, as quoted by Buli News: “Honestly, the whole club has a very positive impression of ‘Mo’ after his first weeks. I think he’s a great guy. He asks the right questions, he always wants to learn on the pitch, he’s very hardworking and has a really good mentality.

“He is fast, very aggressive and very smart football-wise. I think with his talent combined with his mentality, he has a lot of potential. He is a super fit for our playing style.”
