Report says Marcus Edwards deal includes two clauses, one massively benefits Tottenham

Football London journalist Alisdair Gold has claimed in a Q&A session that Vitoria attacker Marcus Edwards has two very important clauses in his contract with the Portuguese side – and one of them could benefit Tottenham in the long-run.

Edwards, 21, joined Vitoria last summer after failing to break into the senior Tottenham team – despite being compared to Lionel Messi by Mauricio Pochettino. He managed just one first-team appearance.

Only one outing on loan at Norwich and a disappointing two goals in 28 outings for Dutch side Excelsior saw Spurs allow him to leave on a free last summer. He has since impressed in glimpses for Vitoria, having a hand in 13 goals in 27 games.

Scoring six goals, Edwards has also laid on seven assists and even scored in the Europa League against Tottenham’s Arsenal. Asked if the England youth international could return to north London, Gold spoke about Edwards’ contract clauses.

He claimed that Edwards has a release clause worth £13.6million, but perhaps more beneficial to Tottenham – is that Spurs have included a 50% sell-on clause. It means any fee Vitoria receive for Edwards, half will go to Spurs.

TBR’s view – Should Tottenham spend the eight-figure fee?

Not yet. Edwards has impressed in what is his first proper season with regular first-team football. In a side that are very much mid-table in the Portuguese top tier, Edwards has been a threat and has been just as lethal as creative.

He is probably not worth the eight-figure fee just yet – and certainly he would not get into Tottenham’s first team. But, a couple more seasons of improvement at Vitoria and more goals and creation, should convince Spurs.
