Report: Salford City line up deadline day move for Sunderland defender Jack Baldwin
Sunderland defender Jack Baldwin could head out before today’s 17:00 deadline. According to The Sunderland Echo, Salford City are hoping to land Baldwin on loan today.
Salford won promotion from the National League, via the play-offs, last season and they are now competing in League Two. After winning on the opening day of the season, Salford have not picked up a victory in their last five league matches – drawing four of those.
The Ammies, who are part-owned by several ex-Manchester United players, now want to add Baldwin to their squad. After conceding eight goals in six games, Graham Alexander is hoping that Baldwin will firm things up at the back.
Sunderland might allow the 26-year-old to leave on loan today – just one year after signing him from Peterborough United. Jack Ross is well-stocked in the central defensive department after Joel Lynch arrived on a free transfer.
Baldwin is arguably the fifth-choice centre-back on Sunderland’s books. Jordan Willis, Alim Ozturk, Tom Flanagan and Lynch could all be higher than him in the pecking order.
With first-team game time limited, Baldwin might choose to move on. The ex-Hartlepool defender could benefit from a loan spell to get minutes under his belt. This could either help him earn a Sunderland recall (if he finds his best form) or attract interest for a permanent move in the future.
