The Daily Express has claimed that Crystal Palace and Roy Hodgson are looking to elbow the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and other Premier League clubs aside for Bournemouth winger Ryan Fraser.
Fraser, 26, is set to leave Bournemouth for nothing this summer with his contract due to expire in June. That has alerted a number of English clubs, given that Fraser has an excellent record – 16 goals and 29 assists in 120 Premier League games.
The report claims Tottenham are leading the race for the Scotland international this summer, but Jose Mourinho is unconvinced as to whether Fraser can hack it at a top-six club. Indeed, he has endured a difficult campaign with Bournemouth.
Somewhat outshone by Liverpool loanee Harry Wilson, Fraser has scored just once in 28 league games and only created four goals. But last season, he had a hand in 21 strikes, scoring seven and creating 14.
Now, Palace are desperate to blow Spurs out of the water and bring Fraser to Selhurst Park – but Spurs are certainly in the driving seat. Interest from the other half of north London, in Arsenal, is said to have cooled.
TBR’s view – Do Tottenham need Fraser?
On his day, Fraser can match any winger in the Premier League. Powerful, blisteringly quick and boasting plenty of end product, Fraser can score or create goals. But consistency is an issue.
Last season, he was one of the best players outside of the top six but this season he has struggled alongside Bournemouth failing to escape a relegation dogfight. It appears that when the team does well, Fraser does well.
Playing on the counter suits Fraser and Tottenham prefer to keep possession, as do Arsenal. Palace, meanwhile, love to play on the counter and a move to Selhurst Park fits like a glove. Indeed, a move to Tottenham would see Fraser struggle.
